Healing Circles

My brother commented that 40 years ago, Top Gun was the #1 movie and we were at war with Russia. He asked: “Am I just waking up and the last 40 years were a dream?”

How can we contend with the reality of a history that repeats itself - whether it’s a nightmare or a dream? What resources do we now possess that allow us to realize when we’re trauma informed or resiliency informed? Do we continue to live in fight, flight, or freeze mode or can we rethink the hero’s journey and overcome our suffering, create a new community, and practice reciprocity?

After WWII, the Marshall Plan focused on preventing the spread of Communism and stabilizing international order. The 25th anniversary of the Marshall Plan resulted in the creation of the German Marshall Plan with the goal of making Europe and America stronger together. As the 75th anniversary approached, the ReThink CEE Fellowship was established to assist next generation thought leaders and focus on residency innovations and strategies for a more unified Europe and collaborations for democracy. The Marshall Plan began as a dream and has continuously evolved as we rethink our actions and objectives.

“The truth is that telling heals…Events stranger than dream come into being and we are left to find the medicine in them.” Mark Nepo, The Exquisite Risk

When the pandemic first infiltrated itself into our world, Dr Omar Reda rethought his concepts about trauma and brought his book Tangled to rethink Covid 19 into a path of transformation called Covid 20, a suggestion of how to move forward as Wounded Healers, and transform our world by being Liberated. Author and social activist Gareth Higgins asks us to transform both old and new villages and to rethink ways to be afraid well in the book How Not to Be Afraid. Both of these men have dreams of reconciliation and liberation. I had a dream of incorporating these resources into a workshop that explored both trauma and resilience and together we developed a session for the New Story Journey titled “Moving Onto Both/And”. Now that I’m returning to the classroom, I want to rethink, reframe, and recast our social studies curriculum so that we can talk of the harm and harmony found in our world through a safe and enlightened container. I dream of incorporating the work of evolutionary leaders such as those found in the following books:
